The Foundation & Soil We Share
What are the everyday moments that give you pause?
The teacher who takes an extra minute to tell you your child’s success story from class that day?
The text from a friend that lands at just the right time?
The sound of your kids laughing in the yard?
Those little moments may not look like much on the surface, but together they’re what hold us steady. They’re what remind us we belong somewhere.
When I say “community,” what comes to mind?
By definition, community is two things:
A feeling of fellowship with others - born from sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
A group of people living in the same place or connected by something they share.
But community is more than a definition. It’s the foundation we build together - the everyday structure that holds us up.
That foundation is poured in ordinary moments:
The quick hello or smile at the grocery store.
The casserole or DoorDash left on a doorstep.
The hug at school pick-up when another mom looks like she might fall apart.
Sometimes that foundation feels shaky - families stretched thin, support hard to find.
And sometimes it feels strong - neighbors showing up, kids laughing in safe spaces, moms breathing easier because they know they belong.
If we want a community that’s resilient and loving, we have to pay attention to the cracks and reinforce the strong beams.
Because tomorrow’s community - the fellowship we long for, the place where we belong - rests on the foundation we’re building together today. It works best when we have fertile soil - full of nutrients and created with love.
